Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing arm of Alibaba Group, delivers digital infrastructure and services including computing, storage, databases, networking, and artificial intelligence across more than 200 countries and regions. As part of its continued global expansion, the company has launched its Edge Node Service (ENS) in South Africa to strengthen its cloud infrastructure presence in the region. This deployment strategically places computing, storage, and networking resources within internet service provider (ISP) data centers, bringing applications and services closer to end users to reduce latency and improve performance.
The platform is designed to support industries such as e-commerce, gaming, video streaming, financial services, and manufacturing by enabling lower latency connections, reduced cross-border bandwidth usage, and compliance-ready cloud operations.
Eric Wan, Vice President of International Business and General Manager of the Middle East, Turkey, and Africa at Alibaba Cloud Intelligence, highlighted the company’s work with local partners including telecom operators, independent software vendors, system integrators, and start-ups. According to Wan, these collaborations focus on addressing regional challenges such as connectivity gaps, logistics optimization, and access to financial services.
Artificial intelligence (AI) remains central to Alibaba Cloud’s global strategy. The company plans to integrate its AI capabilities with ENS deployments in South Africa to support digital transformation projects across multiple sectors.
