The service, built on a direct digital integration with government systems, is available at select locations and is set to reach 100 branches by mid-2026

Capitec has launched a Smart ID application service across a selection of its branches, in partnership with South Africa's Department of Home Affairs (DHA). The service follows a pilot period and is being rolled out in phases, with the target of 100 locations by the middle of next year.

Customers can apply for a Smart ID through self-service terminals installed in participating branches, without a prior appointment. The process is paperless, takes under five minutes and connects directly to DHA systems for real-time processing. Applicants receive a notification when their document is ready for collection at the branch.

The partnership addresses a gap in the current government infrastructure. Of the DHA's 349 offices nationwide, only 190 are currently equipped to process Smart ID applications. At the same time, the department estimates that more than 4.4 million South Africans over the age of 16 have neither a green ID book nor a Smart ID card, a figure that carries practical consequences, as identity documents are required to open a bank account, vote or access formal employment.

Capitec operates more than 860 branches across urban, township and rural areas, a footprint that the bank says positions it to extend access to communities where DHA offices are limited or difficult to reach. "An ID is a catalyst for economic participation," said Graham Lee, Group Chief Executive Officer of Capitec. "By integrating Home Affairs services into our branches, we are using our scale and technology to shorten long journeys and help fill a real gap in underserved communities."

Minister of Home Affairs Leon Schreiber described the rollout as an example of public-private collaboration delivering practical results. "By bringing Smart ID services into bank branches, we are moving closer to a future where people no longer have to travel long distances or stand in long queues to access this fundamental right," he said.

On the technical side, Capitec built a proprietary integration connecting its in-branch terminals directly to DHA systems, hosted on Amazon Web Services. The setup allows the bank to manage terminals centrally and deploy updates without requiring on-site Home Affairs staff, a departure from the model used by other institutions that have piloted similar services.

The application fee is R150, made up of the standard DHA charge of R140 and a R10 Capitec service fee. The bank says no additional fees apply.
