Checkers trials smart shopping trolleys in South African stores

Checkers, part of the Shoprite Group, has begun testing smart shopping trolleys in select stores. The six-month pilot allows customers to scan, pay, and receive tailored promotions directly on the cart.

Checkers, a supermarket chain operated by the Shoprite Group, has launched a pilot program to test smart shopping trolleys in South Africa. The initiative aims to evaluate how technology can be integrated into physical stores and streamline customer interactions.

The Checkers Xpress Trolley enables shoppers to scan and pay for items directly on the cart, bypassing traditional checkout lines. Each product is scanned on the handlebar before being placed in the basket, while the system tracks additions and removals in real time. The trolley’s interactive display also provides aisle locations, product details, and a running total of purchases.

The smart trolley is connected to the Xtra Savings loyalty program, showing tailored promotions during the shopping journey. Customers can search for items, view store promotions, and create wishlists, while real-time updates help guide purchasing decisions.

The six-month trial began with internal testing by employees at Checkers Hyper Brackenfell in Cape Town. From late August, customers at Checkers Constantia and Checkers Hyper Brackenfell will also be able to test the trolleys, with 10 units available per store.

At the end of the shopping process, payment can be completed directly through the trolley using details stored in the Checkers Sixty60 app. Store staff will assist customers during checkout to ensure a smooth process.

According to Neil Schreuder, Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer at the Shoprite Group, the trial is intended to assess how technology can support both customer needs and employee efficiency in physical retail environments.
