Digital Africa, an initiative supported by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs and Proparco, has launched a €50 million (about US$57 million) seed-stage investment fund designed to expand early-stage financing across African markets that have historically received limited venture capital activity.
The programme builds on Digital Africa’s existing portfolio, which has supported more than 70 startups across 16 countries through its pre-seed funding mechanism. The organisation operates within a broader public development finance framework linked to Agence Française de Développement (AFD), which focuses on supporting private sector development in emerging economies.
The new structure, called the Digital Africa Seed Fund (DASF), is intended to extend funding beyond the earliest startup stage and create a more continuous investment pathway. According to information published by ITWeb Africa, the fund is structured to bridge early-stage capital with later-stage financing, where Proparco typically engages at Series A and beyond.
The fund targets 20 countries considered underrepresented in venture investment flows, with a stated focus on markets outside Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa and Egypt, which are generally recognised as the largest technology ecosystems on the continent. Investment tickets are planned at up to €2 million per startup.
The approach is sector-agnostic but identifies areas of interest including fintech, artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, climate-related technologies, healthcare solutions and space-related applications. The structure reflects an attempt to support companies operating in markets where early-stage capital availability remains uneven compared to larger regional hubs.
By introducing a staged financing model that connects pre-seed and growth-stage funding under related institutions, Digital Africa is positioning the fund as part of a broader effort to formalise investment pathways for startups operating outside established ecosystems.
