South African bank allows users to open digital wallets via messaging app bypassing previous funding requirements

First National Bank (FNB), a major South African financial services provider, has expanded its eWallet service to function within the WhatsApp messaging platform. This update enables individuals to establish their own eWallet directly through the application. Previously, an eWallet could only be created when an existing FNB account holder transmitted funds to a recipient. FNB stated this move is intended to provide a digital entry point into formal financial services for unbanked and underbanked segments of the population.

The integrated platform permits users to perform various financial transactions through the WhatsApp interface. These capabilities include making real-time payments via PayShap, purchasing prepaid electricity, airtime, and entertainment vouchers, and transferring funds from an eWallet to any bank account. Additionally, new customers accessing the service through this channel are eligible to apply for cash advances ranging from R50 to R500.

FNB reported that during the preceding year, customers transmitted over R43 billion using the eWallet service, processing 69 million transactions. Lytania Johnson, CEO of FNB Personal Segment, stated that the enhancement represents a step in broadening access to digital financial services and lowering barriers to entry into South Africa's formal financial system. The updated eWallet is designed for speed, security, and interoperability, according to Hema Morar, FNB eWallet Executive.

Users are now able to withdraw cash from their eWallet at numerous retail partners, including Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, PEP, Ackermans, and select Spar outlets. The service also supports managing bill payments and transacting at fuel stations, as well as withdrawals from Spaza shops via Agency Plus. FNB confirmed that customers retain the option to transact using USSD codes and the FNB application alongside the WhatsApp channel.
