South Africans preparing for this year’s Black Friday deals will have a new way to manage their online spending. Starting 23 October, shoppers on Takealot can now split their purchases into instalments using PayJustNow, the latest digital payment partner on the platform.

The collaboration comes at a time when consumers are navigating rising living costs while still looking to take part in major shopping events.

“People want flexibility, not only in what they buy, but also in how they pay,” said Greg van der Riet, Chief Commercial Officer at PayJustNow. “Through this partnership, millions of South Africans gain access to Takealot with payment options that better align with their cash flow.”

Takealot customers can now choose between interest-free ‘Pay in 3’ instalments or longer, interest-bearing plans such as ‘Pay in 12’, depending on their individual affordability and preferences.

“Every customer shops differently,” said Octavius Vermooten, Chief Financial Officer at Takealot. “By integrating PayJustNow, we’re giving our customers more choice and flexibility, while continuing to deliver on our promise of value, convenience, and happiness.”

According to van der Riet, ensuring secure transactions and promoting responsible spending are key priorities during high-traffic shopping periods. “All users are verified through digital ID checks with Home Affairs, followed by a credit bureau affordability assessment. Each customer begins with a conservative limit that grows over time as they demonstrate responsible repayment behaviour,” he explained.

Last year, PayJustNow processed R65.3 million in sales over the Black Friday weekend, marking a 103% year-on-year increase. The company expects sales to double again during Black Friday 2025, with growth across multiple categories, from fashion and electronics to tyres and department stores.

“Partnering with Takealot not only broadens our reach, but also connects shoppers to a vast range of local and international brands,” added van der Riet. “For many businesses, the Black Friday period is a crucial time to reach new audiences and build lasting customer relationships.”

Vermooten echoed the sentiment, saying Takealot’s focus remains on customer choice and convenience. “Different customers have different financial needs and timelines. By offering flexible payment options, we empower shoppers to make purchases confidently, on terms that suit them, whether that’s upfront or spread over time.”

PayJustNow currently attracts around 100,000 new users every month. Nearly half of them log in multiple times a month to explore brands, deals, and new products. The platform’s user base is primarily millennial and Gen Z, with three-quarters identifying as female and an average monthly income of R21,000.

Since joining, users have made an average of 13 purchases through the platform, with a repeat usage rate of 88%, according to van der Riet.

He concluded:“E-commerce today is about more than just selling products online, it’s about creating seamless shopping and payment experiences. Flexible payment tools like ours can make a real difference, helping more South Africans participate meaningfully in the digital economy.”
