SAP used its annual Sapphire conference to present a new enterprise AI strategy focused on automating business operations across finance, procurement, supply chain, human resources and customer management. The company introduced what it calls the Autonomous Enterprise, a framework designed to integrate AI-driven automation directly into business applications and operational workflows.

The announcement reflects a broader shift among enterprise software providers as organisations look to automate repetitive operational tasks while maintaining governance, compliance and visibility across critical systems. SAP said the new structure combines enterprise data management, AI development tools and workflow automation within a single environment intended to support large-scale business operations.

“For the mission-critical processes of our customers, ‘almost right’ just isn’t good enough,” said Christian Klein, CEO of SAP SE. “By uniting SAP Business AI Platform with SAP Autonomous Suite, we anchor AI agents in the business processes, data and governance so they can deliver accurate, compliant and secure outcomes – unlocking new sources of revenue and meaningful cost savings.”

At the centre of the launch is the SAP Business AI Platform, which consolidates the company’s Business Technology Platform, Business Data Cloud and AI services into one operational layer. The platform is designed to help companies build, manage and deploy AI tools connected to enterprise data and existing SAP environments.

One of the components introduced during the event was the SAP Knowledge Graph, a system that maps relationships between business data, processes and operational structures across an organisation’s SAP landscape. According to the company, this allows AI-driven workflows to operate with contextual information tied to financial operations, supply chain activities and customer processes rather than relying only on isolated data queries.

SAP also announced Joule Studio, a development environment for creating enterprise AI assistants, applications and workflow automations. The platform supports both no-code and traditional development models, allowing companies to build AI-based tools using SAP-managed infrastructure integrated with existing systems.

Building on that foundation, the company launched the SAP Autonomous Suite, which introduces AI assistants capable of executing operational tasks across multiple departments. SAP said the suite will include more than 50 domain-specific assistants designed for functions such as finance, procurement, supply chain management, HR and customer experience.

These assistants coordinate specialised AI agents assigned to specific operational activities. One example presented during Sapphire was the Autonomous Close Assistant, designed to automate parts of the financial closing process, including journal entries, reconciliation procedures and error resolution. According to SAP, the objective is to reduce the time required for financial close cycles from weeks to days.

The company also expanded its Industry AI portfolio with seven sector-focused solutions intended to support industry-specific workflows and regulatory requirements. These offerings incorporate operational logic and data structures tailored to different vertical markets, including environments where compliance and process standardisation are central to daily operations.

SAP’s announcements at Sapphire highlight how enterprise software vendors are increasingly positioning AI as an operational layer connected directly to business infrastructure, rather than as a standalone productivity tool.
