The two-year agreement is positioned as a strategic alliance focused on enhancing performance and revolutionizing the fan experience through technology.

The South African Rugby Union (SARU) and the Vodacom United Rugby Championship (URC) are advancing their use of data and digital tools to support player monitoring, match analysis and operational decision-making.

At a recent event in Fourways, Samsung South Africa outlined a new partnership with SARU and the URC. During the announcement, SARU president Mark Alexander discussed how digital systems have become part of the organisation’s technical workflows.

According to Alexander, SARU uses an internal software platform called Outfox to map and review match activity. Teams receive video clips and analytical breakdowns shortly after each game, enabling coaches and players to evaluate individual and collective actions. He noted that such systems are used across preparation, review cycles and broader planning.

Alexander added that data also informs off-field decisions. SARU is developing digital processes with the intention of increasing the use of operational data ahead of future tournament cycles.

Outfox, created by Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus, functions as a simulation and analysis tool that models scenarios and match patterns. The platform is used to test variations of plays and prepare for multiple in-game situations.

URC CEO Martin Anayi highlighted the role of technology within the championship environment. The tournament includes teams from Ireland, Italy, Scotland, South Africa and Wales. According to Anayi, the organisation uses instrumented mouthguards equipped with sensors to measure variables such as velocity and impact levels. These devices provide real-time alerts when a player absorbs significant contact, supporting decisions about removing athletes from the field for assessment. In training settings, the same data helps track contact exposure and workload.

Anayi also noted the use of artificial intelligence in content production for the league’s digital platforms. He reported increases in URC audience and database growth since its launch.

The event also referenced broader partnerships between technology companies and South African sports organisations. Vodacom recently became the exclusive telecoms partner for Springbok teams and SA Rugby-affiliated competitions. In football, companies such as Oppo and Honor have signed agreements with local clubs and national teams.

Samsung’s new two-year partnership covers all national rugby teams and the URC. According to Justin Hume, vice-president of Mobile eXperience at Samsung SA, the agreement aligns with the company’s product strategy and includes plans to incorporate future device features, including AI-based capabilities. SARU indicated that the partnership will contribute to upgrades in training environments, communication tools for players and media outreach.
