Urovo RT40S targets warehouse and cold-chain operations with rugged mobile design

Handheld device combines long-range scanning, freezer-ready performance and enterprise mobility features for industrial environments

Warehouses and logistics operators are under growing pressure to improve inventory accuracy, speed up fulfilment processes and maintain visibility across operations. In environments such as cold storage facilities, distribution centres and industrial warehouses, that challenge also depends on devices capable of operating reliably under harsh conditions.

The Urovo RT40S, distributed in South Africa by DCI Scanning, was developed for these environments, combining rugged mobility, long-range barcode scanning and enterprise connectivity in a single handheld terminal.

The device includes a 1D and 2D scanning engine capable of reading barcodes from distances of up to 15 metres, allowing warehouse teams to scan inventory stored on high shelving without relying on ladders or additional manual handling. The approach is designed to support stock counts, picking operations and inventory management in large-scale facilities.

One of the main focuses of the RT40S is cold-chain operation. The handheld can function in temperatures as low as -30°C and includes an anti-condensation screen with automatic heating to prevent fogging inside refrigerated environments. This is particularly relevant for sectors such as food logistics, pharmaceutical distribution and cold storage warehousing, where device interruptions can affect operational continuity.

The RT40S also features an IP68-rated enclosure for protection against dust and water exposure and is designed to withstand drops of up to 1.8 metres onto concrete surfaces. The industrial build is intended for continuous use in warehouse and field operations.

Powered by a Qualcomm octa-core processor, the device supports Android 13 and includes 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage to handle warehouse management applications and real-time data processing. Connectivity features include WiFi 6, 4G, Bluetooth 5.0 and GPS support for communication between mobile devices, backend systems and operational teams.

To reduce downtime during long shifts, the RT40S uses a 5 200mAh hot-swappable battery that can be replaced without powering down the device. According to the company, fast charging allows the unit to recharge in under three hours.

Additional features include glove-friendly operation, physical keypad options, an ergonomic handheld design and a 13MP camera for on-site documentation and workflow support.

The RT40S is positioned for use across warehousing, manufacturing, inventory management, retail distribution and industrial field operations where businesses require mobile devices built for demanding operating conditions.
