Wave Senegal launches virtual visa card to drive digital payment inclusion

In partnership with Visa and Ecobank, fintech firm Wave unveils a new in-app virtual card to simplify and secure online payments across Senegal and beyond.

Wave Mobile Money has officially launched its Wave Visa virtual card in Senegal, a major step in expanding digital and financial inclusion across Africa. Developed in collaboration with Visa and Ecobank Senegal, the new feature allows Wave users to make secure payments directly from the app on e-commerce sites, streaming platforms, and other online services.

The initiative builds on Wave’s mission to make financial tools simpler and more accessible across the continent. Backed by Ecobank’s expertise in secure digital banking, the rollout aims to offer a dependable and transparent payment option to millions of Senegalese users seeking a safer way to engage in the digital economy.

The product’s launch follows a successful pilot phase in Ivory Coast and Senegal, where strong user feedback confirmed the demand for faster, easier online payment solutions. According to Karamokho Badiane, Wave’s Regional Director for Business Development and Partnerships, the company refined the virtual card based on real user experiences, ensuring it meets daily needs efficiently.

Wave Senegal’s General Manager, Malick Gueye, described the launch as a key milestone in the company’s mission to simplify financial services. “Our users can now make online payments as effortlessly as they complete daily transactions in the Wave app,” he said.

Instant issuance, seamless integration, and enhanced security are central to the virtual card’s design, reflecting Wave’s ongoing push to make digital finance practical and inclusive. Visa Senegal Country Manager Sandra Gayibor highlighted that the partnership aims to expand access to secure digital payment solutions, empowering millions to transact safely online.
