WeThinkCode has secured R35 million in funding from Google.org to develop and implement a new AI training programme across South Africa and Kenya. The initiative aims to equip 12,000 participants with practical AI knowledge aligned with current workforce demands.
The grant comes at a time when many businesses in Africa report difficulties in accessing AI talent. According to a recent SAP study, 90% of companies in the region have experienced setbacks, such as project delays and limited innovation, due to a shortage of AI skills.
WeThinkCode has focused on training unemployed youth from underserved backgrounds to become employable software engineers. With the support of this new funding, the organization will offer a no-cost, extracurricular course lasting between 40 and 80 hours, designed to serve two core learning tracks:
- AI for software engineers: 6,000 learners will receive hands-on training in AI-driven programming tools and development workflows.
- AI for non-technical roles: 6,000 individuals working or studying in fields such as education, law, and healthcare will learn how to apply AI in routine tasks to increase efficiency and job readiness.
The programme will prioritize accessibility for participants from low-income households, especially in rural and peri-urban areas. To support this, WeThinkCode will enhance its learning platform to enable both remote and in-person delivery, including adaptations for local languages where necessary.
The organisation will also collaborate with companies in finance, telecommunications, and tech consulting to help participants demonstrate their new skills and improve their employment prospects.
